DOSA Positions to be filled at the September 19th 2008 meeting
WEEKLY COFFEE TEAM (2)
2 students who are responsible for providing delicious coffee, (+ cream and sugar) once a week which is available for purchase to oceanography students, postdocs, staff and faculty.
RILEY LECTURE COORDINATOR (1)
Once a year the oceanography grad students nominate and elect a distinguished oceanographer to visit the department and present the Gordon A. Riley Memorial Lecture. The coordinator calls for nominations, holds the election, and coordinates all aspects of the lecturers visit. This is one of the most demanding (but rewarding) DOSA positions. The ideal candidate has strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.

CDOGS COMMITTEE (4)
Once a year, usually in March, the students in the Department of Oceanography hold a one day conference, CDOGS (Conference of Dalhousie Oceanography Students), to present past, current or proposed work. Students on the committee will be required to assist in multiple tasks, including: organizing and coordinating speakers, creation and printing of the conference booklet, finding and setting up equipment, arranging the post conference party, etc.

DAGS REPRESENTATIVE (1-2)
DOSA is a society under the umbrella of DAGS (Dalhousie Association of Graduate Students). The DAGS REP attends the DAGS meetings which are held once a month (usually at the Grad House), and reports to DOSA. Attendance at meetings is mandatory for DOSA to continue to receive funding from DAGS.
CURRICULUM COMMITTEE (1)
Student representative on the department curriculum committee. Responsible for participating in meetings regarding the curriculum, assisting in the decision making process regarding the direction of the curriculum, planning new courses, reevaluating student course requirements, etc.
FACULTY MEETING REPRESENTATIVE (4)
Student representatives at Oceanography Faculty meetings, one from each
subdiscipline
(Biological,
Chemical, Geological, Physical). The students will also act as the contact
points for communicating student interests and concerns to higher levels
within administration.
SAFETY COMMITTEE (1)
Student representative on the departmental safety committee. Brings student's concerns to the committee when (and if) they meet, regarding laboratory or workplace safety issues/suggestions.
WORKSHOP COMMITTEE (1)
Student representative on the departmental shop committee. Brings student’s concerns to the committee when (and if) they meet, regarding issues/suggestions on events within the workshop (located on the 2nd floor).
OUTREACH COMMITTEE (2)
These students are responsible for coordinating efforts between the department and the student body for all outreach activities: Academic Fair, Dalhousie Open House, Recruiting new students etc., for finding and organizing volunteers for these events, and assisting in all aspects of these events (i.e. setting up equipment, giving tours, etc.).
SOCIAL COMMITTEE (2-3)
Students are responsible for assisting (planning, organizing, etc.) in any departmental social events occurring during the academic year.
INTRAMURAL CO-ORDINATOR (1)
This student is responsible for identifying student interests in extracurricular sports/activities, setting up, coordinating and organizing these sports teams and recruiting students to participate in these teams. Past oceanography intramural activities have included softball and rock climbing.

WEBPAGE (2)
Students
are responsible for the maintenance of the DOSA webpage
(http://www.phys.ocean.dal.ca/dosa),
which involves posting current and past events, keeping updated information on
students and student activities, and adding content regarding student websites
and general interest information. At least one of the students
will also attend Departmental Web Committee meetings (about 1 hour a month),
and possibly help out with some webpage tasks.
