EPSONDE, an instrument which measures centimetre-scale profiles of turbulent shear and temperature gradients, is used in NATRE and other experiments to profile turbulence intensity and estimate the rate and mechanisms of vertical mixing. The instrument was designed and built by Dr. Neil Oakey of the Bedford Institute of Oceanography. (Right: close-up view of the sensors.)
