  Abstract

  Current, temperature, fluorescence and surface elevation are presented from St. John's harbour for 24 July to 27 August and 12 October to 9 November 1999. Two Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler's (ADCPs) were deployed in July/August and one in October/November to measure the current velocities at the mouth of the harbour. Analysis of the current data shows that the flow over the sill is quite complex. The mean flow had a three-layer structure in July/August and a two-layer flow in October/November. The mean flow at the surface is out of the harbour during both periods. Transports computed from the current data were compared with results obtained using surface elevation observations from the harbour. There was reasonable agreement at tidal periods but very poor agreement at subtidal periods. Currents in the centre of the channel were not representative of the entire channel at subtidal frequencies. The amplitudes and phases of the five primary tidal constitutents show relatively little vertical structure except for the semi-diurnal band in July/August for which there is clear evidence of a baroclinic tide. An energetic band at about 0.5 cycles per day, coherent with the wind, was observed in July/August, but not in October/November.

  Abstract

  Current, temperature, fluorescence and surface elevation are presented from St. John's harbour for 29 July to 18 September. Three Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler's (ADCPs) and two S4 current meters were deployed in the Narrows of St. John's Harbour to measure the current velocities at the mouth of the harbour. The integrated along-channel interpolated current agrees with the observed sea-surface elevation at tidal periods. It is therefore clear that the cross-channel measurements provide a good description of the current flow through the Narrows. At longer periods, beyond 2-4 days, the agreement between the integrated currents and the sea-surface elevation is not as good, for reasons that we do not understand. One ADCP, one S4 current meter, one RCM current meter, and 13 Vemco thermistors were deployed outside the Narrows to measure the flow of the Avalon current. Analysis of the temperature data show strong coherence at longer periods, 2-4 days, between the temperature signals measured in the Narrows and those above 25 m outside the Narrows. The strongest tidal variation outside the Narrows is parallel to the along shore direction, north-south. Within the channel, more than 90% of the current variance, at all periods, is directed along the channel.

  Abstract

  Seven moorings were deployed in Placentia Bay and recorded current velocity data from April to July 1999. The data were analysed to determine the circulation around the bay. Four of the moorings were deployed at the mouth of the bay and consisted of two current meters at depths of 20 m and either 45 or 55 m. The remaining three moorings each carried one Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). The observed circulation around the bay is cyclonic. The weekly mean currents measured at each mooring location are consistent in direction, but vary in magnitude. There is little correlation between the wind stress measured at Argentia and the observed currents at any depth. Results of tidal analysis and detided low-pass filtered currents are presented. The dominant source of variance in the circulation is at the M2 tidal frequency.

  Abstract

  Trinity Bay is a large, northward facing embayment on the Avalon peninsula that regularly exhibits strong upwelling activity. Strong, summer winds from the southwest lead to an upwelling response that is most intense on the western side of the Bay. We report on an oceanographic study conducted in May 2000 in which a towed body was cycled through the Bay and three temperature moorings were deployed and recovered. The three moorings each help 6 Vemco temperature sensors. The moorings were deployed near the shore on the northwest side of Random Island towards the mouth of the Bay. Two surveys were conducted with a Chelsea Nu-Shuttle towed body that collected CTD, fluorescence, and biomass data. We present the towed body data together with some of our quality control analysis of the data from the Chelsea Nu-Shuttle instrument.

  Abstract

  Several cruises were undertaken during 1986 and 1987 for the purpose of collecting CTD data. This data is presented here to document the data taken from these cruises. The presentation consists only of the contoured, and single cast CTD profiles. Only limited data processing took place; simple quality control, and averaging into one metre bins were performed. The data are mainly from Conception, Trinity, Exploits, Hall, Green, Notre Dame, and White Bays, although some data from outside St. John's Harbour, Bonavista Bay, Bay of Islands, Bonne Bay, the Avalon Channel, and Bedford Basin (Halifax Harbour) are also included.
