The free-surface version of the CANDIE ocean circulation model was also used by Lu, Thompson and Wright in predicting tidal circulation in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. An incremental data assimilation approach was used to assimilate tidal heights from 19 tide gauges around the Gulf into the fully nonlinear, three-dimensional model. They compared the model predictions with the observations and found that CANDIE has reasonable skills in predicting tidal heights as well as the tidal currents in the region.

The above plot shows the model-predicted co-amplitude and co-phase lines for the lunar semi-diurnal tide M2. The amplitudes are in cm, and phases are in degrees relative to mid-night GMT.
