NetCDF

NetCDF is a common data storage solution for large data sets, be it observations or model outputs. One file typically contains a series of related variable, from time stamps to actual data fields, usually with associated coordinates as well.

Getting an overview of a file

The easiest way to quickly visualize NetCDF data is using the ncview program. Although it is probably better to make figures in another way, the quick loading GUI and plots from ncview are very useful to get a cursory glance at the data while developing code to actually process it.
