Plain Language in a nutshell

• Aim for a Grade 8-12 reader
• Present concepts that anybody can understand
• Use simple, precise words
• Expand noun strings into full sentences
• Convert nouns into verbs
• Use the subject-verb-object ("I see you") order
• Use personal pronouns (I, me, you, your, our, etc.)
• Turn negatives into positive
• Watch your punctuation
• Consider audience, purpose, structure, design and expression
